Facts

Over 236 bird species

The Lower Oder Valley is one of Europe's most important bird areas. Cranes, whooper swans, white-tailed eagles and rare grassland-nesting birds find breeding, resting and wintering sites here.

50 kilometers long, only 5 km wide

The national park extends approximately 50 kilometers along the Oder River and protects more than 10,000 hectares of unique floodplain landscape.

Nature without borders

Together with the Polish protected areas, the national park forms one of Germany's few cross-border large-scale protected areas – an internationally significant habitat along the Oder River.

The Lower Oder Valley National Park, shaped by the Oder River floodplain, consists largely of open landscapes and is a habitat for many rare animals and plants. A natural area of exceptional diversity is emerging here:
Vast floodplain meadows, quiet oxbow lakes, reed landscapes, dry grasslands and near-natural forests characterize the Lower Oder Valley National Park - a natural area of exceptional diversity.

In the area, floods, seasons and natural dynamics partially determine the rhythm of the landscape. Thousands of migratory birds rest in the flooded areas, white-tailed eagles circle over the floodplain and rare plant species find their last refuges.

The national park combines wilderness, tranquility and nature experience – directly on the German-Polish border and only a few hours from Berlin and Szczecin. As Germany's first and only floodplain national park, it protects one of the last largely intact near-natural river floodplains in Central Europe.
